The Children's Literature Comprehensive Database (CLCD)

Reliable, accurate, current information in a cost-effective package

FOR TEACHING CHILDREN'S LITERATURE:

“More and more professors and librarians are discovering how the features of CLCD enhance the teaching of Children's and Young Adult Literature courses. The education students have been using the CLCD to look up reviews and to find children's books on specific subjects for specific grade or reading levels for their 3 methods classes. I use it for those purposes, and for compiling my subject bibliographies. I really like it, and so do my students. I think it's better than NoveList, easier to use, with more search options, and it indexes more children's books.”

Krista Hartman
Information Services Specialist/Librarian - Associate Professor at Mohawk Valley Community College Libraries
Utica, NY

“As an assistant professor teaching Children's Literature and working with Education majors, I have found the CLCD to be invaluable. My students find reviews, sources, and other pertinent information. Recently, one of our English majors who is getting ready to student teach had found the names of books her cooperating teacher would be using in the spring. We used the CLCD to find out about the books and to give her a heads up on using them in her teaching practice.”

FOR CURRICULUM-RELATED BOOKS:

“By using CLCD, I just prepared a list of fantasy books with some connection to cats for a ten-year-old girl reading just above grade level. Including the searching, selection, looking at some suggested links, copying and pasting into a Word document, arranging the titles, cleaning up the fonts, and individualizing the annotations for the student, it took about twenty-five minutes!”

Barbara Ripp Safford
"Don't Judge a Database by Its Search Screen"
School Library Media Activities Monthly, Vol XXII, Number 2

“In our district, teachers are often looking for multiple similar titles to use with small reading groups in the class. CLCD is a great tool to help you find multiple titles with a similar theme on the same or slightly varied reading levels.”

Christine Findlay
CRC Director, Centerville City Schools
Centerville, OH

FOR READING MEASUREMENT PROGRAMS:

“The elementary reading and language arts teachers really like the lexiles, and reading and interest level features of the database. It really helps them recommend books to their students.”

Quinby Frank
Librarian, Green Acres School
Rockville, MD

FOR LITERATURE CIRCLES AND SUMMER READING:

“Our school is committed to engaging and nurturing the girls' interests in science, technology, engineering and math. The database helps me flesh out areas of the collection that can quickly become dated; by entering keywords, I then find titles to plug the holes in my collection or to fill a new need. Titlewave and Amazon are not as good with their limiters [as CLCD].”

Walter Mayes
Librarian, The Girls' Middle School
Mountainview, CA

FOR BEST BOOKS, STATE READING LISTS, AND AWARD WINNERS:

“Having the reading lists, awards, and reading measurement scores for the items readily available in each record also saves time and is of great worth to anyone looking to either buy or use a particular book. The scores would be especially helpful to the teachers or school librarians who use the database.”
