Meeting the Needs of College and University Librarians, Professors and Students
As a teaching tool
"I am a professor in a library science education program. One of the courses I teach is Cataloging. Because most library catalogs are not automated and require that items be cataloged into an electronic template called a MARC record, I teach my students to catalog directly into a MARC editor. As part of the process they use when they're learning to catalog, I tell them to look for an example--a good MARC record for the item they want to catalog and to look at how the cataloging was done before they create their own record. The CLCD database has been very useful for that purpose. Since many of the students are school library media specialists or will be, I tend to select children's literature to catalog, because they will use it in their work."

As a reliable and efficient resource
"The CLCD is an invaluable tool in my position as an Assistant Professor of reading and children's literature. Having the database right at hand as I put together book lists and check the publication data for books makes my job so much easier. I can't imagine going from one hard copy resource to another to find what I need. The convenience alone makes it worthwhile for me.
CLCD has grown over time and has adapted to its user's needs. This database has everything I need and should I discover something else I would like, I expect CLCD is already one step ahead of me! I recommend this database for anyone who is serious about children's literature."

"One of the purposes of the Cooperative Children's Book Center is to support teaching, learning and research needs related to children's and young adult literature. With its Web-based access, the CLCD provides a new venue for what the CCBC does to highlight outstanding books for the young and makes this information available in new ways."

As an up-to-date subject search engine
"In both my Children's Literature and Reading in the Content Areas classes, I require my students to make use of the CLCD. Good children's books are the tools of a good teacher's trade so connecting them with CLCD is important. I require, in both courses, that they create a text set and the CLCD is a great resource for that. My students go online and get their ideas from CLCD before they go out and find them in libraries and bookstores. They are generally amazed at what is available out there for the children they teach."

As an easy-to-use resource locator
"I wear two hats at my college: I am the Curriculum Librarian and I teach Literature for Children. I use CLCD in both roles with the students in the School of Education. The ease with which they can retrieve titles by searching subjects, and then find impartial reviews of those titles, makes them eager users. The ability to be very specific in their searches gives these future teachers confidence in their ability to locate books to meet their needs. Their work in the college classroom is very much enhanced by the database, and I know their teaching will reflect this experience."

As a cost-effective resource
"Our students and student teachers find the CLCD especially helpful to support their Children's Literature courses. Also, they have been happy to find that the Instructional Materials database assists them in locating materials and ideas to take into elementary, middle school, and secondary classrooms, as well as in completing assignments for their Teaching Methods courses. We were delighted to find that the expanded databases have been offered at such a reasonable, affordable price, so that students at small colleges like ours can continue to access this growing resource."
