Karen M. Smith (Library Media Connection, January/February 2009)
This simple, straightforward series with several subsets is easy-to-read and well-written. Each book contains sidebars that provide interesting facts and thought-provoking questions for critical thinking skills. In addition, all titles contain a glossary of bold-faced words found throughout the text, and ‘For More Information’ that includes books and Web sites. Although there are various authors, the writing style and layout are consistent. The authors present information about each topic, which includes historical facts and events, equipment and technological advances, future outlooks, and famous innovators. Due to the nature of the titles, there is some overlap in information, but that only strengthens the series as a whole. Photographs and artwork add to the already interesting text. The information is rather basic; however, it will meet the needs of reluctant readers and younger students. Students that have an interest in the topics will enjoy browsing, but the texts can also be very useful for research. Index. Recommended. 2009, Cherry Lake Publishing, 32pp. ea., $27.07 ea. lb. Ages 8 to 14.
