Sara Lorimer (Children's Literature)
A rebozo is a long scarf that is worn by women in Mexico. Rebozos can be beautiful, decorative shawls or practical slings for carrying babies. In this thin, colorful book, a young girl lists some of the many uses she sees rebozos put to: cleaning up spilled ketchup, playing peek-a- book, and being spread by Mama spreads like a butterfly to pretty up her dress for Sunday morning. Some of the uses are funny (e.g., a “bandage” tied around and around a puppy) and some are practical (e.g., “Grandma uses her to keep the cold away on winter nights”). The illustrations are charming, and the book has a warm, familial feel about it. It would work well in the classroom to supplement a discussion of clothing of various cultures or for stimulating discussion about activities that families do together. 2008, Tricycle Press/Ten Speed Press, $14.95. Ages 3 to 7.

Horn Book (The Horn Book Guide, Fall 2008)
In rhythmic voice, a young girl describes the different uses her various family members have for a rebozo (Mexican shawl). Bright, textured acrylic illustrations with a strong sense of line decorate this celebration of cultural heritage. An author's note gives more information about the rebozo as well as asking readers what they might do with one. Category: Picture Books. 2008, Tricycle, 32pp, $14.95 (hb). Ages 4 to 9. Rating: 3: Recommended, satisfactory in style, content, and/or illustration.
