Seth and Kendra are none too thrilled to stay with their grandfather while their parents go on a cruise. He does not seem too excited about having them either, regulating their stay with a list of rules they must not break, such as “don’t go into the woods” and “stay out of the barn.” Kendra, a timid rule-follower, complies. Seth, on the other hand immediately begins breaking the rules. The siblings soon discover that their grandfather is the care-taker for a preserve that is the home to a myriad of mythical creatures, many of which are incredibly dangerous. Seth, who never seems to learn from his mistakes, breaks the rules yet again on one of the most dangerous days in the preserve and lets dark, magical creatures into the house. Eventually everyone except Kendra ends up prisoner to these dark creatures, leaving the timid Kendra to save them. Kendra’s discovery of her own inner-strength is the plot highlight in a story that is a bit slow to get started. Kids who love fantasy may find the plot interesting enough to plow through this lengthy novel; however, the flat characterizations will leave many readers wanting more. 2006, Aladdin Paperbacks/Simon & Schuster, $6.99. Ages 9 to 14.
