John Peters (Booklist, Sep. 15, 2007 (Vol. 104, No. 2))
Correctly noting that Mary Mapes Dodge’s Hans Brinker is “more loved than actually read these days,” Coville offers a much shortened version that strips away the travelogues, the cultural commentary, and the inset “hole in the dike” tale to focus on the protagonist’s admirable character and the theme of a family “struggling to thrive against great odds.” Many of the melodramatic elements remain, however, from the buried treasure and the sudden recovery of Hans’ amnesiac father to the boy’s noble sacrifice at the race’s climax. Illustrator Long’s full-page and full-spread oils reflect the original’s innate romanticism, depicting figures dressed in luxuriously swirling garb skating gracefully down frozen canals or posing against picturesque landscapes. This adaptation won’t tempt anyone to tackle the full-length classic, but it will find an appreciative audience among fans of lushly illustrated fairy tales. Grades 3-5
