In this retelling from Edmund Spenser's Faerie Queene, the Red Cross Knight is sent by the Queen of the Fairies to save a kingdom from a fierce dragon. A three-day battle takes place ending with the dragon's death. The Red Cross Knight's bravery wins him the kingdom, a wife, and his title, Saint George of Merry England. Hodge's dramatic retelling of this legend is accompanied by beautifully detailed illustrations that won Hyman the 1985 Caldecott Medal. Category: Adventure; Award Books; Fantasy; Folklore.
