After Mama's death, Anna, Caleb and Papa are left to live alone on the prairie. One day, Papa decides to find a wife to come live with them and be a mother to his two children. He finds a mail order bride who tells them that she is "plain and tall". Anna and Caleb write letters to Sarah, asking her questions, and hoping she will come live with them.
