Sherri Ginsberg (KLIATT Review, March 2005 (Vol. 39, No. 2))
The conclusion to the Circle of Magic quartet is exciting and well written--this audio version is a special treat. Briar, formerly a street rat, is now training to be a mage. He has a comfortable living arrangement amongst friends Sandy, Tris and Daja. One of them is constantly nagging Briar to pick out a date to be his birthday so they can all celebrate, but other than that minor bit of delightful nuisance they are all comfortable and fond of each other. However, a disease is spreading throughout the land; one of Briar's friends dies and Briar is committed to finding a cure. Author Pierce narrates, and there is an additional full cast of 22 performers. The voices are young and they are old; wise and foolish; sad and happy. All the voices are polished and wonderful to listen to. A bonus is the eerie music that plays sometimes in the background, adding a perfect touch. It is not essential to have heard the first three in the series as this volume stands on its own; but listeners will want the others, so plan on adding them as well if you don't have them already.
