The Young Scientist series pairs a guide to inquiry learning for teachers of young children with a comprehensive guide and video for trainers. The result is a "triple-win" situation in which presenters, participants, and their preschool and kindergarten students get authentic hands-on/minds-on explorations in key areas. Discovering Nature with Young Children helps teachers use a developmental approach to guide children to open inquiry with plants and animals. It emphasizes skill development in observation, questioning, investigating, representing ideas, and analyzing. The guide helps teachers set up a physical environment that includes living things. There are guides for discussions, demonstrations, and explorations. The approach taken by the training guide allows teachers to learn science processes and content as if they were young elementary students themselves. Many teacher trainers need help structuring professional development experiences in this way. Although the teacher's guide is useful in itself, it is much more effective when used as part of the workshop structure described in the Trainer's Guide and illustrated in the video. The guide includes an outline for presentation, several transparency masters, and forms for planning activities like guided discussions. Using both the teacher's and trainer's guides and the video, the overall outcome would be a constructivist approach to teacher development and a win-win-win situation for all. If you want to provide authentic hands-on/minds-on training for primary science teachers that includes science processes and content, this package is ideal. Grades K-4.
