Mary Quattlebaum (Children's Literature)
Young readers can celebrate Native American Heritage Month with Meet Naiche: A Native Boy From the Chesapeake Bay Area. Through text by his aunt Gabrielle Tayac, Naiche tells of his dog, bike and interest in soccer and computers at his public school. He also proudly shares information on Piscataway history and tradition. Naiche's grandfather is chief of the Piscataway Nation and his people have lived for thousands of years in Maryland and the Chesapeake Bay region. Photographs by John Harrington show Naiche and his family participating in the Awakening of Mother Earth ceremony, creating traditional crafts, such as featherwork, and dancing at powwows. This engaging book is the first in the My World: Young Native Americans Today series planned by the Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian. 2002, Beyond Words, $15.95. Ages 7 up.

Anita Barnes Lowen (Children's Literature)
With this book, a new series, "My World: Young Native Americans Today" debuts. Produced by the National Museum of the American Indian and the Smithsonian Institution, this book and the books to follow "seek to augment awareness of Native American beliefs and lifeways, and to educate the public about the history and significance of Native cultures." Naiche is a modern Piscataway child who lives in rural Maryland near the Chesapeake Bay. In telling his story the author teaches the reader to what it is "like to be a Native kid today." Although Naiche's everyday activities are the focus of the book, the history and culture of his family, ancestors and tribe are woven seamlessly into the chronicle of his life. Colorful photographs on almost every page of the book depict the ordinary and special times of Naiche's year. Although Naiche is a young boy from a different ethnic and cultural background, readers will learn that he has the same cares, joys, dreams and needs any other child. As Naiche says, "My life is probably a lot like yours." 2002, Beyond Words Publishing, $15.95. Ages 9 to 12.

Horn Book (The Horn Book Guide, Fall 2003)
A contemporary Piscataway boy describes his life and his participation in the ceremony for the Awakening of Mother Earth. The book includes good information and well-reproduced photographs, but the format is confusing and the narration jumps awkwardly from one topic to another. (My World: Young Native Americans Today series). Category: Nonfiction-History. 2003, Beyond, 48pp, $15.95. Ages 9 to 12. Rating: 4: Recommended, with minor flaws.
