Annie Ayres (Booklist, May 1, 1996 (Vol. 92, No. 17))
Ten-year-old Alicia Inez Ramos feels like she has waited her entire life to visit the beach and is determined to enjoy and treasure every experience no matter what her bossy big brother might do to spoil her trip. Alicia knows, however, that it is because of Sergio that she is going since she's been invited by her brother's girlfriend to join her family's annual summer vacation on the Gulf Coast. Over the weekend, Alicia discovers what it is like to see and swim in the ocean, build a sand castle, search for seashells, catch a fish, and more. And in being part of another family's vacation, she also discovers a fresh vision of herself, her own family, and her relationship with her brother. Alicia's account of her experience brims with the bracing flavors of the beach and the immediacy of each moment as it rolls in like a wave and breaks upon her. Category: Middle Readers. 1996, Arte Publico/Pinata, $14.95 and $5.95. Gr. 4-6.

Uma Krishnaswami (Children's Literature)
Alicia's the tag-along little sister on her brother's trip to the beach with his girlfriend and her family. It's a large and expansive family, burgeoning with kids and hugs and food, and Alicia is, to say the least, a bit overwhelmed. This could be any old beach trip, except she's never been to the beach before. Between sand in her mouth and tar on her new bathing suit, it's quite an experience. Alicia is a sweet protagonist, and Bertrand tells the tale simply and with character. The story transcends cultural limitations, yet the book portrays the Latino family honestly and vividly. 1996, Piņata Books, $14.95 and $5.95. Ages 10 up.
