Thomas's crushing grief over his father's death lifts during a Christmas with Grandfather, who knows the right things to do to ease his sadness.

Mary Harris Veeder (Booklist, October 15, 1994 (Vol. 91, No. 4))
Wolf focuses on the familial rather than the religious significance of Christmas in this holiday story. Since his father's death, Thomas "just couldn't believe in Christmas anymore." When he and his mother journey to Thomas' paternal grandfather's home in the mountains to spend the holiday, they are both grieving. Grandfather, who looks like Father Christmas, lives in a cozy drift-covered cottage and loves to feed the forest animals who live nearby. By asking for help in decorating a tree and repairing an old toy horse, Grandfather gradually brings Thomas and his mother out of mourning. The broad blue vistas of the snowy landscape contrast with the warm browns and reds within the cottage, and the presence of a jolly cat, dog, and mouse remind children of a world free from emotional burdens. It's with deeds, not preachy words, that Grandfather addresses the sadness of loss. Category: For the Young. 1994, North-South, $14.95 and $14.88. Gr. 5-8.

Marilyn Courtot (Children's Literature)
Thomas doesn't look forward to Christmas this year--it just wouldn't be the same now that his father is dead. He and his mother receive an invitation to spend Christmas with Grandfather in his mountain cabin. The visit to the chilly mountains thaws his mother's memories--she regales Thomas with stories about his father's youth. Thomas receives a special present, and learns that continued traditions keep our memories alive, and that happiness can follow grief. 1994, North-South, $14.95. Ages 5 to 10.
