Moira Rose Donohue (Children's Literature)
On the edge of the rainforest, in the mangrove tree, the three-toed sloths snack and sleep. And snack and sleep some more, moving very slowly from tree to tree. They are not lazy. It is just their nature to move slowly. Each mother sloth has only one baby which she raises by herself. Sloths cannot digest the leaves in their stomachs when they are cold, so after a chilly night, they climb to the tops of the trees to warm themselves in the sun. They carry with them a pack of insects and plants that nest in their hair. By six months, the baby sloth is half the size of its mother and begins to venture out on its own, learning to avoid the ocelot--its natural enemy--and skinny tree branches which can break under their weight. This book, like others in the “Nature Babies” series, follows a baby sloth from birth until it reaches adulthood, sprinkling key facts along the way in such gentle prose that the reader does not even realize he is learning. The photographs are perfectly matched to the text and reader cannot help but fall in love with this strange creature. 2004, Fitzhenry & Whiteside, $6.95. Ages 4 to 8.

Baby Sloth is part of the "Nature Babies" series targeted at "the next generation of naturalists" and produced by wife and husband Audrey Lang and Wayne Lynch. The duo has produced a wonderful series of books depicting baby animals in their natural environment. Young readers discover that the three-toed sloths can be found in rainforests moving so slowly and sleeping a lot. Baby Sloth introduces readers to the life of a newborn sloth, a life which ranges from eating leaves as a source of food to learning to live alone once the mother leaves him behind at the age of six months. The young sloth grows and along the way learns valuable lessons. "High in the thick mangrove trees, a baby sloth clings to his mother. As he grows, the young sloth learns what leaves are best to eat, and where to climb the treetops to bask in the sunshine after frequent rains. But the sleepy sloth never leaves the safety of the trees. It isn't until his mother finally deserts him that the lonely young sloth must discover the world below all by himself." Baby Sloth contains a table of contents and an index. Each book also includes a "Did You Know?" component of interesting facts. These books are well-written for young readers and are accompanied by beautiful colored photographs of baby animals in the wild. These books would be a great addition to elementary schools and appropriate for all public libraries. Highly Recommended. Rating: **** /4. Kindergarten-grade 3. (Nature Babies) 2004, Fitzhenry & Whiteside, 36 pp., pbk. & cl., $9.95 (pbk.) and $16.95 (cl.). Ages 5 to 8.

The information in these two books, Baby Sloth and Baby Koala, is simply and clearly written. The author and photographer have sometimes taken up to three trips to gather their data and take the pictures. Every photograph is crystal clear and of the highest quality. They allow the reader to feel as though they are standing face to face with the animal highlighted in its particular book. Each book begins with an introduction from the author, table of contents and then the main text. The information runs smoothly from beginning to end with no subtitles and touches on basic research topics of habitat, reproduction, food, enemies and interesting facts. These books are great and the kids in my grade two classroom, especially those who love animals, are thrilled when a new book is introduced into the classroom library.
