This next chronicle in Lloyd Alexander's Prydain series of five is just as engaging as the first, THE BOOK OF THREE. THE BLACK CAULDRON continues the story of Assistant Pig-Keeper, Taran, and his companions. As they set off on another adventure, Taran and his band of friends continue to battle evil and save their land from the forces of Araven. Taran still longs to be a hero, and as he travels on this quest to fulfill his destiny, he travels an interesting journey, which helps him realize that being a hero may not be all it's cracked up to be. This book is highly recommended to all readers, young and old, who enjoy engaging tales of fantasy and adventure. This book also includes a pronunciation guide in the back, which is wonderful for the younger reader. (Chronicles of Prydain. Rev. and expanded ed.) Fiction, Highly Recommended. Grades 5 and up. 1999, Holt, 182p, $17.95. Ages 10 up.
