Reviews:

Dr. Elaine A. Richman (Science Books and Films (Vol. 35, No. 4))
This book is about the decades of effort and the skirmishes that went into conceiving of, and finally landing, the exploratory vehicle named Sojourner on the surface of Mars. The chief author, a smart and passionate engineer and leader, is the head of the team that designed and developed the roving, microwave-sized robot. The book is fun to read (in parts) and occasionally contains intrigue and suspense. Mostly, it shows the reader the complexity of the space effort, including the intellectual, social, and political challenges. A person who is interested in aerospace engineering and space exploration would find the book engaging. Most readers, however, would find it stilted, despite Shirley's use of personal stories about herself and her coworkers. The volume does contain bursts of well-flowing language and captivating text. Had the story been written as a novel, it would have had a broader reach. Still, if nothing else, the book is a worthy tribute to its author, a trailblazer for women in science, engineering, and management. Acceptable, Grades 7-College, General Audience. 1998, Broadway, viii+276pp., $25.00. Ages 12 to adult.
