Barbara Troisi (Children's Literature)
It's a bird! It's a plane! No, it's a dog! A happy feeling came Sid's way one day as he walks to school. He'd just said good-by to mom and dad when suddenly this cream-colored pup with distinctive brown accent smudges--left ear, right eye circle, and tip of tail with a red pack strapped on his back, suddenly went twirling through space like a doggy shaped balloon. When he shares the uplifting experience at school, classmates (especially bulldog Gus) and teacher challenge his reliability and ask him to demonstrate the newly discovered skill. Inability to recreate his flight know-how makes Sid sad and dejected, but upon arriving home the pup's belief is restored when Dad reveals their shared flying abilities. Young readers will dream big with the rhyming verse, elegant gouache illustrations that render amazing scenery combined with charming expressions and the antics of bold sized animal characters virtually leaping off the page. 2003, Candlewick Press, $15.99. Ages 4 to 8.

Horn Book (The Horn Book Guide, Spring 2004)
When Sid the dog thinks a happy thought on his way to school one day, he floats up in the air and begins to fly. When he reports his adventure his classmates laugh at him and tell him that dogs don't fly. His father, however, sympathizes and tells him a secret--some dogs do. The final bright illustration shows Sid and his parents floating cloudlike over their yard. The cheerful story is told in a lively rhyme. Category: Picture Books. 2003, Candlewick, 40pp, $15.99. Ages 4 to 9. Rating: 3: Recommended, satisfactory in style, content, and/or illustration.
