Joseph R. DeMarco (KLIATT Review, January 1999 (Vol. 33, No. 1))
This is a wonderful book -- funny and dark and delicious. It's the story of a teenager coming to terms with his vampirism. Chris wants to be "normal"-- whatever that means to a teenager. In his case, it includes living in a Midwestern setting in which vampires are a real part of life. There is a yearly festival, The Sad Festival of Vampires, celebrated in his region. Some of the "sacred" sites are paved over and built upon -- but the belief goes on among the people. Chris now finds himself becoming one of the vampires that folks see in the shadows or rushing through the forest. This, he fears, will definitely interfere with his plans to date Rebecca Schwartz. And, he's right. The style is just right for the YA audience. It reminds one of the outstanding movie "My Best Friend is A Vampire," which is also the story of a teenager coming to terms with his vampirism. Both the book and the movie are imbued with a great sense of humor as well as many other qualities which make them appealing and memorable.
