Getting struck by lightning endows 16-year-old Jessica with the psychic ability to find missing children, but her good-intentioned calls to a missing-persons bureau lead to trouble. After being thrust into the limelight, she's taken to a military base, where the government plans to use her as a guinea pig to find criminals. Her predicament endangers a child she's been trying to help. Told as one long statement to the authorities, Jessica's thrilling first person-account of her adventure is enhanced by raucously funny teen observations. Smart and talented, but no stranger to the school detention hall, Jessica makes a likable, believable protagonist. Carroll adds another layer of conflict by having upper-class Jessica falls for a handsome, rebellious biker who becomes both the object of her affection and an accomplice to her clever plans to elude the authorities. Colorful characters, multilayered conflict, and biting wit jumpstart the 1-800-WHERE-R-YOU series at high speed. Category: Books for Older Readers--Fiction. 2001, Pocket, $5.99. Gr. 6-12.

Barbara Jo McKee (KLIATT Review, May 2001 (Vol. 35, No. 3))
When sixteen-year-old Jessica Mastriani's best friend decides they need exercise and should walk home from school one afternoon, Jess is plunged into an unreal life. Trying to avoid a rainstorm, they go under the bleachers, where Jessica is hit by lightning. She then finds she has a new talent--she knows where missing children are. When she starts calling the national hotline to report their whereabouts, the federal government sends agents to get her and put her in a nearby military base where they can observe her. The characters are well drawn, from the stubborn and feisty Jess to her motorcycle-riding boyfriend Rob who knows he is too old for her; to her parents who are trying to understand her powers and handle her schizophrenic brother, who is disturbed by all the media attention; to Sean, a missing child Jessica wishes she had never rescued. A page-turning read that will have teens lining up for the next Jess story.
