Caroline Haugen (Children's Literature)
Kyle, his sister BeeBee and their parents are heading on a family vacation to the Oregon coast. BeeBee and Kyle have never been out of Kansas. Since their father is Salesman of the Year, the entire family gets to go to the awards conference in Oregon. However, the vacation is not what Kyle had expected. Daren, the school bully, turns out to be there as well. In addition, there is a terrible disaster while his parents are out on a cruise and Kyle has to learn to take care of himself and BeeBee. While the story has the potential to be highly interesting and suspenseful, it lacks the realistic detail for readers to become involved in the plot and invest themselves in the characters. The best part of the book is the sub-plot of eight-year-old BeeBee's obsession with the financial market. The book would be much stronger with more details and explanations. 2003, Simon & Schuster, $15.95. Ages 8 to 12.

Horn Book (The Horn Book Guide, Spring 2004)
On vacation in Oregon, Kyle and his younger sister, BeeBee, spend the evening in a hotel while their parents attend a business dinner. When an earthquake jolts the area, the kids must first escape a fire at the hotel, then head for higher ground as a tsunami speeds toward the coast. Kyle's first-person narrative effectively sustains suspense in this fast-paced adventure. Category: Intermediate Fiction. 2003, Simon, 153pp, $15.95. Ages 9 to 12. Rating: 3: Recommended, satisfactory in style, content, and/or illustration.

Virginia Gleaton (The Lorgnette - Heart of Texas Reviews (Vol. 16, No. 3))
This is a story of thirteen-year-old Kyle, his sister Bee Bee, and their family as they spend their vacation on the Oregon Coast. Kyle is assigned to baby-sit his sister while their parents go on a business dinner on a yacht. He doesn't like the idea of having to take care of his sister. The next morning, Dad takes the family along the sandy beach. They encounter a warning sign that says "T-S-U-N-A-M-I"(a giant wave caused by an earthquake). Kyle's dad gives complete instructions on what to do if they should encounter the giant wave. Readers will enjoy the suspense and action of Kyle and Bee Bee's vacation. They will also enjoy the story of how, in times of danger, people can find their true selves rather quickly. Fiction. Grades 5 and up. 2003, Simon & Schuster, 151p., $15.95. Ages 10 up.
