Stephanie Zvirin (Booklist, April 1, 1999 (Vol. 95, No. 15))
Sweet had her hands full illustrating this lively story of a bat parade, which doubles as an introduction to basic multiplication. "Let the good times begin, / the Grand Marshall cried / and a bevy of bats dropped out of the sky." One drum majorette leads the band, followed by "piccolos piping in twos," flautists marching three by three, and so on, until 385 bats are assembled, carefully grouped to show the sum of the products of 1 x 1, 2 x 2, 3 x 3, and on through 10 x 10. The numerical problem is pictured in a separate illustration in the corner of the page. Little ones will enjoy this for the spunky rhyme, and the peppy illustrations will give them opportunities to practice counting; older children can use it to help them visualize what happens during the multiplication process. Category: For the Young. 1999, Morrow, $16 and $15.93. Ages 5-8.

Susie Wilde (Children's Literature)
Summer's a great time to learn about the orchestra. You can begin with basics at home and then travel on a musical field trip. Picture books are a good place for the young to start and this familiarity is increased by choosing a book by a known author. The same bats that delighted young fans in Kathi Appelt's theatrical Bat Jamboree are back in Bats on Parade. Appelt sets up parade excitement as an animal audience lines the streets. Then we're off and rhyming with piccolo-players, flautists, cadets playing clarinets, all the way to the 100 sousaphones! Numbers, instruments, rhyming rhythms--a book children will love. 1999, Morrow, $16.00. Ages 3 to 6.

C. Henebry (Parent Council Volume 7)
This marvelous, humorous counting and multiplication rhyming book will delight preschoolers as well as those children learning to multiply. The water color illustrations are a delight. A great gift! 1999, William Morrow-Children's, $16.00. Ages 3 to 8.
