Ilene Cooper (Booklist, October 1, 1997 (Vol. 94, No. 3))
Evie is one lucky little girl. She wants to wear something new and finds a hat. She wants to play with something new, and grandfather makes her a kite. She wants to run up a steep hill, and her legs carry her there; and when she wants to fly the kite, the wind carries it away. And when she is tired, her sister wraps her in a blanket and her father sings her a song. Although this has no tune, little ones might hear one in their heads as they listen to the softly rhythmic text that moves like a kite in the breeze. The text beautifully captures the concerns of a young child, and, as always, Williams' artwork touches the very core of childhood itself. From the expressions on Evie's face, from delight to impatience to sheer wistfulness, to her childlike movements, the watercolor art seems right at home with its subject. Preschoolers, alone or in groups, will enjoy meeting Evie, an intrepid little kid who is lucky enough to be surrounded by love--and knows it. Category: For the Young. 1997, Greenwillow, $15 and $14.93. Ages 3-5. Starred Review.

Marilyn Courtot (Children's Literature)
Evie is not a beautiful little girl, but she has a beautiful outlook and is surrounded by a loving family. Grandpa makes a kite and she has a wonderful time flying it. When she is hungry, grandma has dinner ready, All through the day her mother, grandparents, sister and father have brought joy into her life. The ordinary becomes extraordinary in this delightful book filled with bright, simple illustrations. Evie is indeed a "lucky" little girl and her song will resonate with young children. 1997, Greenwillow, $15.00 and $14.93. Ages 3 to 7.

CCBC (Cooperative Children's Book Center Choices, 1997)
When little Evie woke up wearing her moon-and-stars pjs, she knew she wanted to do something, something new. She found a new hat on a hook, and her grandpa made her a small kite to fly. Evie's mother ran out to watch, and her grandma had some supper ready after she came in from the adventure. Her sister wrapped Evie's own blanket around her. Her father sang a song about his little Evie, her kite, and her day. Lucky Evie. She had everything any child needs most: a home, clothing and food. Most of all, she had loving family members to give her what every child also needs most: loving attention. In More, More, More, Said the Baby artist/author Vera B. Williams proved that she fully understands both the color wheel and very young children. In Lucky Song she demonstrates this once again with joyous expressionistic images in an emotionally rich circular story explicitly inviting readers to go back to the beginning. Evie is already equipped to sing her own song for many years to come. So are the children who accept the invitation to see, hear and reread Lucky Song. Because of the book's joy, affection and beauty, adults won't even mind hearing their children ask them to "Read it again." Winner, Charlotte Zolotow Award CCBC categories: Books for Babies and Toddlers. 1997, Greenwillow, 28 pages, $15.00. Ages 2-5.

Kirkus (Kirkus Reviews, 1997)
Lucky Erie--what she wants, she gets. "Now this little Evie wanted to do something, so she got ready. She wanted something new to wear, and on the hook she found it." When Evie wants to fly a kite, the wind takes it. When she wants supper, her grandma has it ready, and when she wants a song, her father sings it--the text of the book itself, an abstract ode to contentment. Evie appears to be about four, and in the last scene, points the way to readers: "If you want to hear that song again, go back to the beginning." The comforts and joys of someone her age are well understood by Williams (Scooter, 1993, etc.), and the pictures, putting Evie center stage, emphasize the importance of the child in her benign and homey surroundings. Supporting her independence, though, are family members who one by one contribute to her activities. Intense colors and exuberant poses compensate for the sometimes unfinished look of the art--Evie's hair changes, and her grandfather is a funny, balding child/man. The overall effect is as lively and spontaneous as a child's perfect day--and that makes this a very lucky song for readers. 1997, Greenwillow, $15.00; PLB $14.93. © 1997 Kirkus Reviews/VNU eMedia, Inc. Horn Book (The Horn Book Guide, 1997)
Little Evie wakes up one morning to a day that is both ordinary and miraculous, a day she spends close to home and family but in which her every wish is granted. The prose is flat, but the relentlessly linear story is relieved by a neat circular ending, and the concept couldn't be more on target for preschoolers. Williams uses the same lush, color-saturated palette and backgroundless stage as she did in ''More More More,' Said the Baby'. Category: Fiction. 1997, Greenwillow, 24pp.. Ages 2 to 5. Rating: 2: Superior, well above average.
