Ilene Cooper (Booklist, June 15, 1992 (Vol. 88, No. 20))
A few steps above an easy-to-read, this simple chapter nonfiction book offers profiles of four athletes who overcame physical adversity to become winners in their respective sports. For Wilma Rudolph, it was not only polio, but also poverty she had to surmount. One of 16 children, Rudolph was faced with racism early. Since blacks and whites could not be treated at the same hospital, she had to travel 50 miles each way to be seen by doctors after getting polio at age four. Still, she overcame the effects of her illness and went on to win three gold medals for track at the 1960 Olympics. Gymnast Bart Conner, bicyclist Greg Lamond, and baseball star Jim "Catfish" Hunter are the other figures profiled. The readable text is broken up by color and black-and-white photographs as well as color paintings. An interesting choice for sports fans. Category: For the Young. 1992, Random, $7.99 and $3.50. Gr. 2-4.
