Miles Vorkosigan's first case as an Imperial Auditor starts off with a bang, literally, when a space freighter collides with a satellite orbiting the planet Komarr. The satellite is part of the long-term terraforming project on Komarr and Miles is sent, along with another auditor, Lord Vorthys, to determine whether the collision was an accident or sabotage. Shortly after their arrival, Miles and Vorthys visit Vorthys's niece, Ekaterin Vorsoisson, whose husband is the (Barrayaran) administrator of the terraforming project. The terraforming project quickly becomes the focus of the investigation as Miles and Vorthys search for connections and possible reasons for sabotage. Thirty years after the Komarr Revolt there are still Komarrans who want out of the Barrayaran Empire, but sabotaging the terraforming of Komarr would not be in their best interests. Miles and his ImpSec investigators uncover a massive embezzlement scheme within the terraforming project which eventually leads them to the deeper plot underlying the accident. Much of the book focuses on Ekaterin (with whom Miles has, of course, fallen in love) and her deteriorating marriage to Administrator Vorsoisson. Vorsoisson and their nine-year-old son both suffer from a rare disease caused by a genetic mutation. Because of the ingrained Barrayaran fear of mutations, Vorsoisson has kept his condition a secret and refused to seek treatment for himself and his son despite Ekaterin's constant urging. Ekaterin's internal struggles, as well as her new and different perspective on Miles, add depth to the characters. Bujold retains the wit, intelligence, action, and great character development that have made the Miles Vorkosigan series so superior. In Komarr she proves once again that it is possible for the latest book in a series to be as good as the first.
