Ken Marantz and Sylvia Marantz (Children's Literature)
An appropriate companion to Barbara Elleman's new biography Virginia Lee Burton: A Life in Art (Houghton Mifflin, 2002), this collection of four of Burton's perennially popular tales is introduced by Elleman with information about the author and the genesis of the stories. In Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel, the title characters, having nobly dug canals, built roads, and excavated for buildings are being replaced by gas, electric, and Diesel shovels. They heroically offer to build the town hall cellar for Popperville in one day, and they find their place to still be useful. The Little House is a tale of the persistence and survival of a house amid encroaching urban sprawl. In Katy and the Big Snow, Katy the tractor with a snow plow is the heroine in a paralyzing snow storm. Maybelle the Cable Car celebrates the survival of the cable cars of San Francisco, while explaining how they work. This anthology encourages us to respond to Burton's innocent vision. Her style personifies machines and buildings, setting them in page designs with immediate esthetic appeal. Her color drawings are placed against large expanses of white, emphasizing their dramatic qualities. This crisp new edition, close to if not exactly the size of the originals, supplements them as they exist in libraries now, dog-eared with fading colors, but still favorites of children. 2002, Houghton Mifflin Company, $20.00. Ages 3 to 6.

Shannon Jacobs (Children's Literature)
In this collection of four short stories by Virginia Lee Burton, the main characters are all inanimate objects such as a house and a cable car. Virginia Lee Burton wrote these stories from 1939 to 1952. This collection brings together her classics, Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel, The Little House, Katy and the Big Snow, and Maybelle the Cable Car, in a current edition that children can enjoy today. These objects go through a "life" journey that shows how objects can be forgotten or tossed aside by some people, while others continue to consider them valuable. Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel is a wonderful story that shows how Mike finds another use for his steam shovel once it becomes outdated. In Maybelle the Cable Car, the people of San Francisco are able to save Maybelle from "extinction." She is allowed to continue to work even though technology provides other options for transportation. Virginia Lee Burton brings these inanimate objects to life by giving them feelings of usefulness. These stories are interesting but also beautifully illustrated. Burton surrounds the text with illustrations--a technique that helps bring the objects to life. Children will see how things can continue to be used even when they seem old and out-dated. 2002, Houghton Mifflin Company, $20.00. Ages 5 to 8.
