Jean Boreen, Ph.D. (Children's Literature)
Using the perspective of a sixteen-year-old boy named Johnny Moore, Masters introduces her readers to the Wright Brothers and their role as the first innovators in aeronautical history. Chapters 1 through 4 of the book focus primarily on Orville and Wilbur Wright, mainly because it was their work that really gave people the sense that flying could be a viable form of transportation. Masters looks at the brothers’ early attempts to fly as well as their attention to research and what others had done as they strove to make a plane that could be easily controlled by its pilot. Credited with developing approaches that allowed pilots to calculate lift, control the wings, and guarantee power for the engine using propellers, the Wrights were hailed as heroes by many. In Chapters 5 and 6 of the book, Masters turns her focus to the impact of airplanes in our lives today as well as their potential in the future. This book is exceedingly effective, mainly because Masters presents so much factual information in a voice that engages readers. Carefully-chosen photographs throughout the text enhance the information Masters offers, not only about the Wright Brothers, but also the possibilities of the future. A glossary of airline-related words and a section titled “To Find Out More” which provides additional books, websites, videos and organizations are the final necessary touches in this book. Highly recommended. 2004, Scholastic Inc, $29.50 and $9.95. Ages 8 to 14.
