Kay Weisman (Booklist, Sep. 1, 2004 (Vol. 101, No. 1))
Krensky offers 24 zany limericks detailing the adventures of students and staff of "a very odd school / That had only one little rule: / There was recess all day / To learn how to play, / Which everyone thought was so cool." Verses conjure a principal with X-ray vision that probes students' brains, cafeteria swill that turns people green, and everyday traumas in the classroom and on the playground. Petrosino's colorful, cartoon-like illustrations extend the humor of the rhymes, sometimes in surprising ways: french fries leaping from their container, smiling spaghetti crawling off the plate, and evil-grinning Jell-O cubes looking ready to attack accompanied by a text that reads, "Spaghetti that wriggles? / And Jell-O that giggles?" As always with limericks, some tricky rhythms will require a little practice before performing out loud, but this makes a great choice for group sharing or for children who are convinced they don't like poetry. Category: Books for Middle Readers--Nonfiction. 2004, Dutton, $10.99. Gr. 2-5.

Beverley Fahey (Children's Literature)
Welcome to a very odd school where recess can last all day, the principal has X-ray vision, sneaker laces can trip you up, and the multiplication tables are enough to lay low the best of students. Rollicking limericks accompanied by energetic cartoons are a madcap tribute to a far out school with eccentric students and teachers. There is spaghetti that wriggles, and Jell-o that giggles, and a teacher not from our planet who turn his students into statues of granite, and let’s not forget the substitute who “stands up before us” that students wish would morph into a tyrannosaurus. Except for a few occasions where the rhyme is forced for the most part the rhyme and structure of the limerick is not compromised. Clever verse that speaks to kids makes this a positive addition to poetry collections. In the classroom a teacher might model some of the limericks and then encourage kids to write their own. 2004, Dutton, $10.99. Ages 8 to 12.

Horn Book (The Horn Book Guide, Spring 2005)
This collection of limericks about an unusual school--all-day recess, art projects that come to life, and an alien teacher--may appeal to children who enjoy collecting their own limericks about school. Unfortunately, the poems are weak and don't consistently focus on the oddities at the school. Comic book–style illustrations complement the humorous tone of the verse. Category: Nonfiction-Literature. 2004, Dutton, 32pp, $10.99. Ages 5 to 9. Rating: 5: Marginal, seriously flawed, but with some redeeming quality.

Sara Bush (The Kutztown University Book Review, Spring 2005)
This book has everything, an alien teacher, a principal with x-ray vision, a dinosaur substitute teacher and a lunch menu, that moves around the tray. This collection of silly limericks captures a typical day at a not-sotypical school. This is a zany collection of limericks by Stephen Krensky and humorously illustrated by Tamara Petrosino. With clever verse and endless energy, this book is sure to be a hit in the lunchroom, on the school bus and at recess. This book is recommended by Booklist, and a great addition to any children’s library. Category: Picture book. 2004, Dutton Children’s Books, $10.99. Ages 6 to 9.
