Reviews:
Heather Hepler (Booklist, Feb. 1, 2001 (Vol. 97, No. 11)) Reviewed with other books in the On Duty series. Books in the On Duty series, which are written by individuals who have served in the military, describe in detail the glamorous and not-so-glamorous aspects of life in the army, navy, air force, and marines. Each volume is devoted to a specific program, such as army basic training, and takes readers through the routines and demands in concise, chapter book fashion. Submarine includes a look at exercising and sleeping on the ship; Basic Training lends insight into weapons and fitness training programs; Demolition Expert includes some history along with explanations of demolition work. Each volume has many full-color photographs, a glossary, and a few suggestions for further reading. A useful series for younger or reluctant readers curious about the military. Category: Books for Middle Readers--Nonfiction. 2000, Children's Press, $19. Gr. 4-6.
