A new series that entertains. Maggie Maguire is an amazing young woman who grew up in the West, went to finishing school in the East, and now has opened her own detective agency in San Francisco. The time is 1875. Maggie is fearless and multi-talented. In this first book, she is hired to find an heiress, a woman who had been captured by Indians as a child. Maggie finds Harriet drunk in a whorehouse in Bent Elbow, a small town in Nevada. As she attempts to pull the woman together, it is clear that others wish to find Harriet as well, and their intentions are not good ones. Maggie's cousin Grady, her partner in the detective agency, tries to help out even though he is not prepared to endure the discomforts of the outdoors; he does add wit and intelligence to the story, complementing Maggie's fierceness. They are likable; this is fluff but fun. (Historical Mystery Series). KLIATT Codes: SA--Recommended for senior high school students, advanced students, and adults. 1998, Berkley, 220p. 18cm, $5.99. Ages 16 to adult.
