Sadako dreamed of running on the Junior High team, however she soon finds herself running against time when she is daignosed with the "atom bomb disease," leukemia. Although Sadako survived the bombing of her home, Hiroshima, she's unsure she'll be able to survive it's aftermath. Her hope returns when her best friend, Chizuko, reminds her of the story that if she folds one thousand paper cranes then her wish of being healthy again will come true. Based on a true story, Sadako's life not only is an inspiration to the people of Japan, but an example of true heroism to us all. Category: Historical; Non-Fiction. Grade Level: Primary (K-3rd grade); Intermediate (4th-6th grade). 1977, G.P. Putnam. Ages 5 to 12.
