Jeanne K. Pettenati, J.D. (Children's Literature) Detailed black and white illustrations of animals accompany Bible text in this 60th anniversary edition of the Caldecott Medal's first recipient. This approach to Bible learning focuses on the importance of animals in both Old and New Testament stories. It succeeds wonderfully as a way to draw children into learning about the Bible because of their fascination and attachment to animals. The illustrations, which are lovingly rendered, clearly show an understanding of the natural world and of the Bible. The book begins with the story of creation and ends with the "Peaceable Kingdom" passage from the Book of Isaiah. Some particularly notable illustrations include Daniel's lions, Noah's Ark, the ravens feeding Elijah and the Christmas manger scene. 1998 (orig. 1937), HarperCollins, $16.95. Ages 5 up.
