Ilene Cooper (Booklist, March 1, 2000 (Vol. 96, No. 13))
Baby bird is off to school, and his mother is experiencing separation anxiety, which she describes quite lyrically. "Oh, my baby, little one, / the hardest thing I do / is hold you tight, then let you go, / and walk away from you." Mama goes on to explain how her love surrounds the child all day, sitting on his shoulder, nestling in his pocket, and conversely, how she carries his love with her. The text is lovely, but Mama's perspective is adult, the sentiment almost overwrought at times. This problem is mitigated by Dyer's wonderful pictures that bring the emotion to a level that children can understand. Using watercolors as her medium, Dyer offers a whimsical world where sweetly garbed animal children play at nursery school while Mama is at work or dining out. The light, bright pictures will charm young listeners, who will find this book best enjoyed while cuddled up next to Mama. Category: For the Young. 2000, Harcourt, $16. Ages 3-5.

Carolyn Mott Ford (Children's Literature)
Baby Bird feels sad when Mama Bird kisses him good-bye at school and Mama Bird is sad also as she goes off to work. She tells him, "Oh my baby, little one,/the hardest thing I do/is hold you tight, then let you go,/and walk away from you." She leaves him with love that will surround him all day long as it sits upon his shoulder, nestles in his pocket or slips into his lunch box. Mama Bird makes sure he knows that the love will also stay with her by nestling in her collar, hiding in her desk drawer or curling around her coffee cup. The watercolor illustrations show Baby Bird involved in school activities and Mama Bird going through her busy routine as, all the while, they keep that love close to their hearts. The happy moment when Mama picks up Baby at the end of the day is joyfully captured in both text and illustration. This is a lovely, reassuring story for toddlers. 2000, Harcourt, $16.00. Ages 2 to 5.

Horn Book (The Horn Book Guide, Fall 2000)
A mother bird waxes poetic about how much she loves her baby. The rhyming text explains that her love surrounds her baby and herself even when they are apart. Jane Dyer's cozy illustrations glow with warmth, but the text is more for parents than it is for toddlers. Unlike Margaret Wise Brown's Runaway Bunny, love here is talked about instead of shown. Category: Preschool. 2000, Harcourt, 32pp, $16.00. Ages 2 to 5. Rating: 4: Recommended, with minor flaws.

Jennifer Janecek (The Lorgnette - Heart of Texas Reviews (Vol. 13, No. 1))
This touching story tells of a mother's love for her child. She reminds her child that even though they are not together all the time (she is at work, the child is at school), her love is always with him. She also reminds him how important his love is to her and how she is often thinking of him. The rhyming of the text is almost lyrical. The illustrations are soft and soothing watercolors of very people-like animals. This book would be nice to read to a child starting school or as part of a family/relationships-type theme. Grades PreK-K. 2000, Harcourt, Unpaged, $16.00. Ages 3 to 6.
