Kirkus (Kirkus Reviews, 1991)
Sarah, nine, is a lot of help preparing for the Seder, but as she works she is drawn to the special boxes labeled "FOR PASSOVER! DO NOT TOUCH!" Finally, she succumbs to temptation, first nibbling and then devouring the chocolate-covered matzoh. When the extended family gathers and the matzoh supply turns out to be exhausted, love prevails: with a gentle, face-saving story, her father explains that he, too, was a "matzoh mouse" at nine. Sarah's subsequent confession is met with understanding and forgiveness. Though Keavney's people are rather stiff, her illustrations incorporating pages of the Haggadah are effective and her designs have an attractive energy. A satisfying (and useful) story. 1991, HarperCollins, $13.95; PLB $13.89. © 1991 Kirkus Reviews/VNU eMedia, Inc. All rights reserved.
